The Atlantic Puffin (*Fratercula arctica*) is one of the North Atlantic Ocean's most recognizable pelagic seabirds. Endearingly nicknamed the "clown of the sea" or "sea parrot" due to its brightly patterned beak and comical upright gait on land, this resilient species is a master swimmer engineered for life in icy oceanic waters.
Oceanic Life and Morphological Adaptations
Puffins spend more than eight months of the year far out at sea, floating on rolling ocean waters hundreds of kilometres from land. Their dense waterproof feathers, insulated by a thick layer of fat, retain body heat in freezing maritime conditions.
Underwater, Atlantic Puffins literally "fly" through the sea, using their short, muscular wings as powerful paddles to dive to depths exceeding 60 metres (200 feet). It is common for adult puffins returning to nesting colonies to carry a dozen fish arranged horizontally in their beak at once. The standing record recorded by sea bird researchers is an astounding 62 fish in a single load.
Island Nesting Colonies and Conservation Challenges
Each spring, puffins migrate to steep, grassy ocean cliffs on remote islands in Iceland, Scotland, Norway, and Atlantic Canada. Rather than building open nests, they use their sharp claws to excavate subterranean burrows up to one metre deep in cliffside soil.
A breeding pair lays a single egg, which both parents incubate for roughly 40 days.
