The Passive Balance Theory
In 2017, researchers at Georgia Tech discovered that Flamingos are actually more stable on one leg than two. When standing on a single leg, they engage a passive anatomical locking mechanism that requires virtually no active muscular effort — it is essentially free balance.
Flamingos are born grey. Their iconic pink colour comes entirely from carotenoid pigments in the algae and crustaceans they eat — a flamingo fed a colourless diet will turn white within two years.
Feeding Upside-Down
The Flamingo's beak is bent sharply downwards, and the bird feeds by submerging its head upside-down. The upper mandible acts as the lower jaw while feeding, pumping water through comb-like filters called lamellae.
